National Athletic Combine

About National Athletic Combine

The National Athletic Combine was started in 2008 by former NFL, NCAA, and High School coaches in collaboration with leading athletic technology providers who saw the need for a “standards-based” athletic combine, through which high school athletes could be evaluated fairly and accurately for college recruiters and coaches.

NAC Founders

The experience that the National Athletic Combine’s founders bring to the table is invaluable — read a short bio on each of them below.

John Paul Young

John Paul Young has spent 42 years in the business, encompassing 20 years in professional football for such clubs as the Houston Oilers, New Orleans Saints, Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos and Chicago Bears. His accomplishments include six NFL post-season appearances, two AFC championships and five collegiate bowl games. As head coach and general manager of the Dallas Texans (Arena Football League), Coach Young led his team to a Divisional Championship. Coach Young also managed daily operations of all football activities/facilities for several colleges and NFL clubs, including organizing and administrating training camps. Furthermore, Coach Young co-founded and directed the Angelo Football Coaching Clinic, capturing attendance of NFL, NCAA, and high school coaches nationwide. Finally, Coach Young has been instrumental in helping establish and develop the NFL combine from its inception, and continues to be actively involved in football today.

Jim Hess

Jim Hess, whose football career spans 48 years, has coached high school football at every level, winning a Texas State Championship with Rockwall High School. He went on to coach at the college level, served as head coach at every level of college football with the exception of Division III, and brought a National Championship to Angelo State University. Ultimately, Coach Hess spent eight years in the NFL as a personnel scout for the Dallas Cowboys, and served as an official timer at the NFL Combine. Coach Hess is co-founder of the Angelo Football Clinic with Coach John Paul Young, and continues to be actively involved in football in a number of capacities even in his retirement.

Carl Mauck

Carl Mauck spent 13 years as an NFL player and 21 years as an NFL coach. He played and coached in a total of 621 games over his career that started four decades ago. He played at Southern Illinois University as a center and linebacker, graduating with honors. He was drafted by Don Shula of the Baltimore Colts and Shula acquired him at Miami the next year. He played at San Diego for Sid Gilman, where he met Bum Phillips. Bum took him to the Houston Oilers where he played out the remainder of his career. He started coaching at New Orleans with Bum Phillips, Wade Phillips, and John Paul Young. He coached at Kansas City, Tampa Bay, San Diego, Arizona, Buffalo, and Detroit. He served as sergeant of arms of the NFL Coaches Association and was involved in coaching at the NFL Combine for 14 years. After retiring from the NFL, Mauck volunteered at his alma mater for two seasons. They went deep in the playoffs in 2006 and 2007 with the best record in their division. Carl has continued to be active, coaching in all‐star games and speaking at football clinics.

Jim Phillips

Jim Phillips is currently the Athletic Director and head football coach at Greenville High School in Greenville, Texas. The bulk of his football career was spent at Waller High School in Waller, Texas, where he was the athletic director and head football coach for 18 years, and where he rebuilt a struggling program and brought the recognition and respect that comes with that accomplishment to his District. He served as a college head football coach for several years, and subsequently coached under Emory Bellard, famed creator of the “wishbone” offense. Coach Phillips also played college football under Coach Jim Hess at Angelo State, and is the father of three sons, the youngest of whom currently plays Division I football while his middle son just finished his college football career at Texas Christian University and was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the April 2009 NFL draft.
